Madgelene “Madge” (Barker) Smith, age 91, of Jackson, Ohio, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 9, 2019 at Oakwood Community Health Center. She was born July 19, 1927 to the late Gus and Nora (Williams) Barker.
She is survived by her loving family, which includes: her sister, Roberta Faye Tackett of Lawrenceburg, Kentucky; her children: Pam (Roger) Marks of Jackson, Ohio, James (Edith) Smith of Jackson, Ohio, Julia White of Punta Gorda, Florida, Anna (Ed) Annett of Mt. Vernon, Ohio, Todd (Brooke) Smith of Jackson, Ohio, and Arnold (Helen) Smith of Elizabethtown, Kentucky; grandchildren: Jennifer Marks, Amanda McCreary, Jimmy Smith, Megan Cormier, Brianna White, Lee Smith, Lori Smith, Jeff Smith, and Brian Smith; along with several great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Smith; granddaughters, Kristen Marks and Nikki Smith; and son, Lehman “Roy” Smith.
Madge grew up in Brinegar, Kentucky. As a teenager she worked in a factory sewing zippers on uniform pants for the Army. After she married the love of her life, Floyd Smith, she quit working to start building and growing their family. She loved growing and tending to her garden, working on the farm and taking care of her chickens. She loved to cook big homemade meals for the family and loved her sweets, especially Little Debbie cakes. She was a devoted member of the Liberty Baptist Church of Oak Hill, Ohio.
Friends may call on Sunday, July 14, 2019 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Lewis & Gillum Funeral Home of Oak Hill. Funeral services will be held on Monday July 15, 2019 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Rondall Walker officiating. Burial will follow in Pattonsville Cemetery.
