Sarah Alice “Poogie” Cosby Powell, age 87, of Ray, Ohio, died Monday, July 28, 2014 at Fairfield Medical Center, Lancaster, Ohio. She was born December 16, 1926 in Jackson, Ohio, the daughter of the late Britt and Nanny Cosby. She was united in marriage to James C. Powell, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by step-son Edward C. Powell; five brothers: Coston, Heber, Darwin, Stanley and John; four sisters: Wilma Brown, Flossie Valentine, Wylodine Powell and Mary Valentine.
She is survived by one son, Merle James Powell of Ray, Ohio; one grandson, who she raised as a son, Michael James (Brandy) Powell; three daughters: Mary Jan (Darrell) Carter of Ironton, Ohio, Maria Joy (Ray) Nelson of Waverly, Ohio and Marisa Jill Rider of Columbus, Ohio and a very special nephew, Jason Powell, that she helped raise throughout his childhood years; three brothers: William of Jackson, Ohio, Douglas of Ray, Ohio and Daryl of Columbus, Ohio; nine grandchildren: Marcus, Tony, Raye-Lee, Tyree, Ebony, Justin, Nicole, D. J. and Alisa; 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Sarah was a homemaker who enjoyed raising her children and spending time with her grandchildren; She also enjoyed watching NASCAR racing and listening to the music of Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Friends and family will be received on Monday, August 4, at the Mayhew-Brown Funeral Home from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. with the funeral service immediately following at 3 p.m. with Pastor Jorge Anido officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenlawn Memory Gardens, Coalton, Ohio.
