Roger Keith Saltsman, age 63, of Wellston, passed away Friday, July 22, 2016 at his home. He was born December 19, 1952 in Gallipolis, Ohio to Joseph R. Saltsman and Betty J. Cook Saltsman.
Roger was a 1971 graduate of Wellston High School, where he played receiver for the Wellston Golden Rockets football team, and still today, holds the receiving yardage record. Roger was a veteran of the United States Army, having been stationed in Okinawa during the Vietnam era. He retired from the Southern Ohio Coal Company following 26 years of dedicated employment.
Roger was an avid golfer and hunter and he enjoyed coaching kids in the recreational football and baseball leagues, as well as the Jr. High and Sr. High football teams for Wellston City Schools. He was still referred to as “Coach” by many of the former players. Roger was a member of the First Baptist Church in Wellston.
He is survived by his mother, Betty Saltsman of Wellston; son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Beth Saltsman of Jackson; granddaughter, Alanna Matthews; brothers, Bruce Saltsman (Kim) of Wellston, Tim Saltsman (Dan Cotlowitz) of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Kirk Saltsman of Greenup, Ky. and Jim Saltsman of Wellston; former wife and lifelong friend, Cindy Sprinkles Saltsman of Wellston; uncle, Mark Foster (Vicki) of Wellston; nieces and nephews, Eric Saltsman, Tyler Saltsman (Kayla), Lindsay Saltsman, Lauren Saltsman, Ryan Bethel, Madisen Goshorn and Ben Thomas; great-niece, Lorelai Saltsman; sisters-in-law, Diane Downard, Janie Sprinkles and Gwen Thomas, as well as several cousins and lots of friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Joe Saltsman and several aunts and uncles.
Calling hours will be Tuesday from 2 to 8 p.m. at the McWilliams Funeral Home in Wellston. Funeral service will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the McWilliams Funeral Home with Pastor Dick Moore officiating. Burial with military honors will be in the Ridgewood Cemetery.
