Carolyn A. Downey, 75, of Sulphur Springs, died early Sunday, March 10, 2013 at Heartland of Bucyrus.
Carolyn was born Dec. 12, 1937 in Jackson Ohio to the late Wesley Mason and Genevieve (Garthee) Watson and graduated from Jackson High School in 1955. That same year on Nov. 7 she married Gerald “Gab” Downey. They shared 56 years of marriage and created countless memories together with all they accomplished until his passing on Aug. 31, 2012.
Moving to Bucyrus in the early 1960’s, Carolyn cared for her family as a homemaker and also worked at Timken until retiring in the late 1980’s. She was the rock that held her family together and Carolyn loved spending as much time as possible with them; especially during the holidays.
She kept busy golfing in various leagues during the summer months and was proud to have been the women’s club champion at the Bucyrus County Club. In the winter months, she liked to bowl and play in poker clubs. She and Gab shared many evenings dancing together at various events which she loved and she was known to have been a pretty good pool player as well. She took up floral arranging, macramé and later in life enjoyed spending time on the computer.
Carolyn was a member of the Women of the Moose, AMVETS, Elks Lodge and the Bucyrus Country Club.
She is survived by her daughter, Niki (Larry) Weiler-Lee of Bucyrus; two grandchildren, James Weiler and Jessica Weiler both of Columbus; two sisters, Joyce Snow of Mansfield and Gloria (Kenneth) Miller of Bucyrus. Also surviving is a sister-in-law, Lucille Hutchenson of Mansfield and two brothers-in-law, Marvin and Junior Downey both of Jackson; numerous nieces and nephews as well as a longtime special friend, Bonnie White.
