Doris “Joann” (Kinker) Delaney, age 82, of Jackson, Ohio, passed away Friday, May 9, 2014 at Four Winds of Jackson. She was born September 4, 1931 near Firebrick, Ohio, and was the youngest child of Earl “Fritz” and Lyda Hanes Kinker.

Joann was preceded in death by her parents and siblings; John, Raymond, Helen Wallace, and Alma Hartsig. At age two, Joann lost her mother, and her father struggled to rear the children. A close friend and neighbor, Nettie Smith, assisted him with the children, and was like a mother to Joann. Nettie’s son, Durward “Duke” Smith, remained like a brother to Joann, and currently lives in Thornsville, Ohio near his son Marlin Smith and family.

Among many of Joann’s special friends are Olleta Howell Bradshaw who is deceased, Sharon (Norris) Kight of Jackson, Ohio and her daughters, Jessica and Andrea, Marsha McCorckle of Oak Hill, Ohio, and Pam Steele of Jackson, Ohio.

Joann graduated from Blackfork High School in 1949 and later married Jack Delaney who is now deceased. To their union was born one child, Jack Delaney Jr., who resides in Dallas, Texas and is Director of Bands at Southern Methodist University. She is also survived by one very special granddaughter, Kimberly Alice Delaney along with her mother, Katie.

Joann was a long-time employee of Waterloo Coal and had many happy memories of the friendships made there. She was also a member of Trinity Chapel of Jackson. Many friends remember her fondly as having a keen wit and love for life and family. She will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Lewis & Gillum Funeral Home of Jackson, Ohio. No visitation was observed. At her request, a graveside service was held on Monday, May 12, 2014 at the South Webster Cemetery with Pastor Stan Howard officiating. She was buried next to her parents. Her son Jack and his daughter Alice will have a private family service at a later date with Pastor Bob Jones officiating. Online condolences may be sent to www.lewisgillumfuneralhomes.com
