Lawrence N. Smith, 83, of Stoutsville, passed away Thursday, October 24, 2013 at Berger Hospital. He was born July 7, 1930 in Wellston, the son of the late James Franklin and Catherine (Brumfield) Smith.

Lawrence was a graduate of Wellston High School and served in the Marines during the Korean War. He retired from Krogers where he had been head meat cutter.

Lawrence enjoyed traveling, vegetable gardening, and watching all kinds of sports, most especially the Cleveland Browns and Ohio State. His greatest joy was watching his great-grandchildren play soccer and basketball and being there every day to get them on and off the school bus.

Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents; his sister Kathryn; and his brothers Jiggs and Ted.

He is survived by his wife LaRue (Kriebel) Smith; daughter Ranay (John) Sales of Stoutsville; son Brent Smith of Columbus; granddaughter Angela (Chuck Baker) Roby; great-grandchildren, Mason and Anthony Roby and Deanne Marshall; sister Iris (Herb) Ward of Greenville, SC; sister-in-law Mary Jane Smith of Upper Arlington; and brother- and sister-in-law Dwane and Shirley Kriebel of Jackson.

Funeral service will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday, October 27, 2013 at Defenbaugh-Wise-Schoedinger Funeral Home with Celebrant Andrew Hoover officiating. Friends may call from 2 p.m. Sunday until the time of the service. Graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, October 28, 2013 at Ridgewood Cemetery in Wellston with military honors provided by American Legion Post #371.
