Lila Ruth Boothe Buckley, Professor Emeritus of Nursing at the University of Rio Grande and well-known resident of Jackson passed away into the arms of our Lord Jesus Christ on the morning of August 19, 2013 after a long illness. She was 80 years old.
Lila was born on September 23, 1932, the daughter of Raymond and Ruth Boothe, at home in the little house on Portsmouth Street in Jackson, that is known as Jeff’s Key Shop.
Lila graduated in the Jackson High School class of 1949. In high school she enjoyed playing clarinet in the high school band and playing the piano.
After graduation, Lila attended the Mt. Carmel School of Nursing in Columbus, Ohio where she graduated in the class of 1952. Throughout her life she continued to develop her knowledge of nursing by attending many seminars and completing additional post graduate education. Lila later received her B.S. Degree in nursing from the Ohio University-Athens and in 1987 she received her M.S. Degree in Nursing from Wright State University.
Lila was a professional nurse for over 50 years. She worked for the Veterans Administration Hospital in Chillicothe for over 40 years and was a Professor Emeritus at the nursing school of the University of Rio Grande where she worked 10 years. Lila also nursed at the Toledo State Hospital, Mt. Carmel Hospital, Oak Hill Hospital and the Methodist Hospital of Gary, Indiana. Lila became well known as an innovative nurse in the field of psychiatric nursing. Throughout her career she helped develop many well known innovative treatments for mentally disabled patients.
Lila received many awards for her work. The Veterans Administration honored her for lifetime achievement in helping mentally disabled veterans. She was also involved in creation and development of Woodland Centers in Gallipolis, Ohio, in which she held every office in that organization.
In 1952, Lila married Dane Buckley of Jackson, Ohio and they had one son, Michael Dane Buckley of Columbia, South Carolina.
Surviving are her son Michael S. Buckley and his wife Teena Cisco Buckley of Columbia, South Carolina, two grandchildren, Crystal Buckley Barley of Columbia, South Carolina and Zack Buckley of Columbia, South Carolina. Also surviving are two great-grandchildren-Dylan Barley and Landon Barley of Columbia, South Carolina.
Also surviving are four brothers and sisters: Daisy Belle Boothe Valtz of Upper Arlington, Ohio, David Michael Boothe of Hamden, Ohio, Rhinda Boothe LaBella of Jackson, Ohio and Dr. Raymond Lynn Boothe of Jackson, Ohio. Lila also had 7 nephews and 3 nieces and many cousins. Her beloved parents Raymond and Ruth Boothe preceded her in death.
Lila was an active member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Jackson for many years. At the time of her passing she was a member of Faith Lutheran Church (ELCA) on Huron Street in Jackson.
Calling hours are from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday, August 21 at Mayhew-Brown Funeral Home. There will be a private memorial service to be held on Thursday, August 22, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church with Pastor Robin Wargowsky Presiding. Services are under the direction of the Mayhew-Brown Funeral Home in Jackson.
Lila will be interred in the Boothe family plot in Fairmont Cemetery in Jackson at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be sent to the University of Rio Grande, the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), or Faith Lutheran Church.
