Earl Jay Downard, Sr., age 63, of Hamden, passed away Sunday, December 4, 2016 at his home. He was born June 24, 1953 in Wellston, Ohio to the late Ernest Robert Downard and Marjorie Jane Williams Downard.
Earl was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged from the military following 10 years of active duty and one year of active reserves.
Earl was a former truck driver and mechanic for Paul Mercer Sawmill and Logging for 20 years. He enjoyed fishing, mowing and most of all, spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Valerie Sue Smith Downard; daughter, Rebecca Mace (Stephen) of Zaleski; son, Earl Jay Downard, Jr. of Hamden; three grandchildren, Justin Mace, Zachery Mace and Cason Earl Downard; sister, Karen Huffman (Everett) of Buchanan, West Virginia; brothers, James Downard (Diane) of Jackson and Kenneth Downard (Helen) of Seattle, Washington; along with several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Besides his parents, Earl was preceded in death by brothers, Leonard Downard, Aaron Downard and Michael Downard, and sister, Cheryl Goble.
Calling hours will be Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the McWilliams Funeral Home in Wellston. Funeral service will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the McWilliams Funeral Home with Pastor Harry Mullins officiating. Burial, with military honors, will be in the Elk Cemetery in McArthur.
