John Thomas “Tom” Staten

John Thomas “Tom” Staten, age 85, of Wellston, passed away Wednesday, January 13, 2016 at the Adena Regional Medical Center in Chillicothe, Ohio. He was born January 13, 1931 in Jackson, Ohio to the late John Albert “Jake” Staten and Chloie Bea Shover Staten.

Tom was a 1949 graduate of Jackson High School and a veteran of the United States Air Force, who was stationed in England during the Korean Conflict time period. He was a former employee of the Hercules Trouser Company for 29 years. At the same time, he served as a midnight shift dispatcher for the Wellston Police Department. He retired as a coal miner from the Raccoon Mine #3, where he worked for 30 years.

Tom was a hardworking man who enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He was a member of the Wellston Church of the Nazarene and a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 371 of Wellston.

Tom is survived by his children, John Thomas Staten, Jr. of Wellston, Lucretia Coy (Jim) of Wellston, Jeff Staten (Teresa) of Wellston and Scott Staten (Margaret) of Virginia Beach, Va.; sisters, Janet Staten of Jackson and Ruth Tripp of Jackson; brothers, Terry Staten (Charlotte) of Wellston, Jay Staten (Karen) of Columbus and Don Dee Staten (Teri) of Columbus, as well as 13 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Martha Woollet Staten in 2013; sister, Betty Culp; brother, Kevin Staten; and two infant siblings.

Calling hours will be Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the McWilliams Funeral Home in Wellston. Funeral service will be Monday at 1 p.m. at the McWilliams Funeral Home with Pastor David McManis officiating. Burial will follow in the Ridgewood Cemetery with military honors by the combined units of the American Legion Post 371 and the DAV Jackson County Chapter 45.
