Gladys L. Johnston, age 94, of Wellston, passed away Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at the Jenkins Memorial Nursing Facility in Wellston. She was born October 17, 1918 in Catlettsburg, Kentucky to the late William F. Bocook and Arizona Montgomery Bocook.
Gladys was a loving homemaker, mother and grandmother. She was a member of the Hope United Methodist Church in Wellston where she belonged to the Ladies Sunday School class and the United Methodist Women organization. Prior to that, Gladys was a Sunday School teacher for 35 years in the primary department at the Trinity United Methodist Church, formerly known as the E.U.B. Church.
In 1948, Gladys started the first 4-H club in the city of Wellston. She was also a member of the Wellston Senior Citizens and the Wellston Chase Chapter #162 Order of the Eastern Star.
Gladys is survived by her children, Wendell Johnston (Connie) of Jackson, Joseph Johnston (Sue) of Dayton, Lelia “Kit” Beckner (Jim) of Hamden and Lorene Johnston (Keith Woolum) of Wellston; six grandchildren, Robert L. Johnston (Jackie) of Wellston, Lisa Jackson (Chris) of Oklahoma, Joseph Johnston (Stacey) of Middletown, Stephanie Speakman (Bryan) of Hamden, Jimmy Beckner of Allensville and Katie Woolum of Wellston; half-sister, Norma Marquis of Wellston, as well as 21 great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Lewis Johnston in 1975; son, Charles W. “Bud” Johnston; sister, Pauline Henry and brother, James Bocook.
Calling hours will be Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the McWilliams Funeral Home in Wellston. Funeral service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Wellston with John Pelletier, CLP officiating. Burial will follow in the Ridgewood Cemetery.
