James (Jim) E. Canter, age 89, of Oak Hill passed away on March 3, 2013 at his home, surrounded by family. He was born in Oak Hill, OH on March 3, 1924 to the late Lewis Canter and Elizabeth (Brown) Canter. He was married on June 30, 1948 to Evelene (Swann) Canter, his loving wife of 54 years, until her passing in 2002. To this union, five children were born. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was retired from A P Green Refractories. When able, he attended Trinity Chapel, Church of Christ in Christian Union in Jackson, OH. He loved spending time with his family, especially with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by four children, Joan (Lisle) Dill, Jerry Canter, Carol (Ivan) Potter and Cindy (Jack) Adkins, all of Oak Hill; grandchildren, Stephanie (Joe) Schulte, Marci (Eric) Schaefer, Valerie (Denver) Hubbard, Ryan Potter, Brandon Potter, Scott Canter, and Kenny (Jamie) Canter; 16 great-grandchildren, Natalie, Jaima and Alison Schulte, Cole, McKenna and Claire Schaefer, Abbi and Morgan Hubbard, Tori and Erin Canter, Elijah James and Evan Potter, Kayla, Devon, Kenny Jr. and Ani Canter; sister, Katherine Wahlenmaier of Columbus, OH; brother-in-law, Robert (Mary) Swann of Jackson, OH; sister-in-law, Gwenda Swann of Parkersburg, WV; several nieces, nephews and friends.
Along with his wife and parents, he is preceded in death by an infant son, Gene Canter; one brother, Jube and sister-in-law, Bertha Canter; and sisters, Evelene Davis, Bertha Johnson, Geniva Smith and Mary Sampson.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 6, 2013 at the Lewis-Gillum Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Rev. Bob Jones officiating. Final resting place will be in the C.M. Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 5, 2013 at the funeral home.
