By | November 2, 2012

Maxine Oiler Canter, 91, of Wellston, Ohio, passed away on Thursday, November 1, 2012, at Elmwood Assisted Living at the Springs in Green Springs, Ohio. She was born in Springfield, Ohio, on May 28, 1921, daughter of the late James and Janey Williams Oiler, and her devoted stepfather, Fred Oiler.

She married her husband, Albert Ralph Canter, in Gallipolis, Ohio, on September 30, 1939. Maxine was good in writing, spelling, and math and knew how to stretch a dollar to make sure her children had what they needed. While Albert’s job required him to be away from home a lot, she took much of the home improvement projects upon herself and did the work. Her life was dedicated to her mother, husband, son, daughter, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. In her spare time, she kept scrapbooks of newspaper clippings and poetry.

Besides her parents, stepfather, and husband, she was also preceded in death by her son, Ralph H. Canter, in 2010; son-in-law, W. Wade Shepard, in 2011; two infant sisters, Vicy and Bessie; three stepsisters; two stepbrothers; and special aunt and uncle, Wilber and Maggie Cardwell.

Surviving is a daughter, Juanita June Shepard, of Grove City, Ohio; a daughter-in-law, Cheryl Canter, of Clyde, Ohio; nine grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Friends may call at the Jenkins Funeral Chapel in Wellston on Thursday, November 8, from 11 a.m. until the time of services at 1 p.m. with Pastor Steve Mathews officiating. Maxine’s final resting place will be the Ridgewood Cemetery in Wellston.

The family suggests memorial contributions in her memory be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, 322 Eighth Ave., 7th Floor, New York, NY 10001, or by calling 1-866-232-8484.
