Carolyn Whalen, 84, of Wellston, passed from this life Friday, March 16, 2012, at the Jenkins Memorial Health Facility. The daughter of the late Milliard and Elizabeth Moody Downs, she was born December 29, 1927, in Lancaster, Ohio. Carolyn had a long history of local employment at the former McNally-Pittsburgh Company, Jeno’s and Austin Powder.
She is survived by her sons, Nicky (Rita) Huff and Bill Whalen, both of Wellston; daughters, Peggy (Joe) Vickers of Wellston and Sarah Weller of Hamden; grandchildren, Erica Mercer, Shawn Huff, Joseph C. Vickers, Donald M. Vickers, Vincent Vickers, Terry Whalen, Jerry Whalen, Angela Whalen, Jody Weller, and step-grandson Wayne Folden; and 24 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her sisters, Jane Miller and Nancy Riley of Chillicothe; a brother, Thomas Downs of Texas; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and her good friend, Eleanor Caldwell.
In addition to her parents, Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband, Oran Whalen in 1986; and her siblings, Margaret Boystol, Opal Fauble, Mary Austin, Violet Graves, Eva Adrian, Florence McDaniel, Wesley Downs, and James Downs.
Calling hours will be Sunday, from 4 to 8 at the Huntley & Cremeens Funeral Home of Wellston. A funeral service will be Monday, at 1 p.m., at the funeral home with Pastor Jim Griffith officiating. Burial will follow in the Ridgewood Cemetery. Arrangements for Carolyn Whalen have been entrusted to the Huntley & Cremeens Funeral Home.
