Charles F. “Chuck” Wood

Charles F. “Chuck” Wood, age 78, of Wellston, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2018 at his home. He was born Nov. 5, 1939 in McArthur, Ohio, son of the late Fred T. Wood and Edna E. Smith Wood.

Chuck was a 1957 graduate of Wellston High School and a veteran of the United States Army Reserves. Following 27 years of employment, Chuck retired from Southern Ohio Coal Company in 2000, where he was employed as an EMT and Safety Instructor. He was a former Wellston Volunteer Fireman for 15 years, where he was serving as Captain at the time of his retirement. He was also a former employee of SEOEMS.

Chuck was a member and former deacon of the First Baptist Church in Wellston; American Legion Post 371 of Wellston; Black Diamond Lodge #538 F&AM; and the Ohio Archeological Society. In his earlier years, Chuck enjoyed hunting and collecting arrowheads. Most recently, his enjoyments included watching the deer, squirrels and birds in his yard.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Susan K. Montgomery Wood; daughter and son-in-law, Melissa Anne and Michael Riley of Wellston; grandchildren, Alexander Charles Riley and Mikayla Grace Riley, both of Wellston; sister and brother-in-law, Connie and Bill Coogan of Newton, Oh.; along with several nieces, nephews and friends.

Besides his parents, Chuck was preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Pat and Benny Grey.

Calling hours will be Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the McWilliams Funeral Home in Wellston. Funeral service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the McWilliams Funeral Home with Pastor Dave Kelly and Pastor Willard Love officiating. Burial will follow in the Ridgewood Cemetery.
