Mary Patricia (Whiteside) Cornwell

Mary Patricia (Whiteside) Cornwell, age 83, passed away Monday, August 15, 2016 peacefully with her family by her side at Holzer Medical Center. Pat, as she was known to her family and friends, was born January 9, 1933 in Bowling Green, Kentucky, as the only child of Ben Whiteside and Katie Bell Taylor.

Pat married Ernest Cornwell, Sr. on July 25, 1951. Pat and Ernest had one child they named Ernest “Ernie” Cornwell, Jr. Though they had only one biological child, Pat and Ernest took part in the raising of two of their nephews, Kenny and Fred Cornwell. Pat loved all of her boys very much and was as proud of them as she could be.

Pat graduated from Buckeye Hills Career Center’s LPN program in 1979 and worked at Pinecrest Nursing Home as well as other local health facilities. Following her career in nursing, she and her husband spent many of their retirement years in Florida. After Ernest passed away in 2012, Pat returned to Ohio to be with her family.

Throughout her life, Pat had many interests and hobbies including: Sewing, photography, ceramics, bird-watching, baking, reading, raising and grooming dogs, and corresponding with her very wide circle of friends. She had a special ability to make friends anywhere she went, and she was loyal to them.

She is survived by her granddaughter, Katie (Jay) Godeaux; daughter-in-law, Margaret Cornwell; step-grandchildren: Marlana Strom and Brett McDaniel; step-great-grandchildren: William Strom, Janelle Strom, and Meghan McDaniel; several nieces and nephews; special cousin, Martha (Richard) Dils; and her beloved dog, Ozzie.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her son, Ernie; very dear cousin, Helen Satterfield; and great-nephew, Kenneth Cornwell.

Pat was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She is loved and will be dearly missed.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday, August 21, 2016 from 12 to 2 p.m. at the Lewis & Gillum Funeral Home of Oak Hill. Funeral services will immediately follow at 2 p.m. at the funeral home under the direction of Stan Howard. Burial will follow at C.M. Cemetery.
