Phillip E. Denney

Phillip Eugene Denney, age 61, of Jackson, passed away and went to join his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in Heaven in the early morning hours Thursday, June 23, 2016 at Kings Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Kentucky. He was born April 27, 1955 in Wellston, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Doris (Downard) Denney; an infant brother, Roger Denney; a granddaughter, Caitlin Rosabel Sherman; and special brothers-in-law and friends, Donald Taylor and Ronald Hatten.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Mabel (McManis) Denney of Jackson; three daughters, Melanie (Bradford) Sherman, Tara Jean (Brandon) Lawson, and Scarlett Renee Denney, all of Jackson; a brother, Russell (Brenda) Denney of Wellston; a sister, Eva (Mike) Hill of Wellston; a granddaughter, Celyn (Cece) Sherman, of Jackson; a special sister-in-law, Alice (Jeanie) Taylor, of Columbus; a special brother-in-law, William McManis and his wife, Cindy, of Jackson; and several nieces and nephews.

Phillip faithfully served his God as a longtime member and Deacon of Emmanuel Baptist Church of Jackson, where he particularly enjoyed making visitations alongside Pastor and longtime friend, William “Dobie” Wyant. He enjoyed sports, hunting, fishing and being outdoors; he was an avid reader and fan of westerns and history; and his hobbies included writing poetry as well as gun making and collecting.

A hard-working and dedicated civil servant, he was a longtime employee of the City of Jackson, where he worked for 24 years, including his most beloved position as the sexton of Fairmount Cemetery. He later spent four years working as an employee of Lick Township.

Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 27 at the Mayhew-Brown Funeral Home in Jackson. A funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 28, also at the Mayhew-Brown Funeral Home, with Pastor Dobie Wyant officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Phillip’s memory to Emmanuel Baptist Church of Jackson or to the National Kidney Foundation.
