Stanley R. Carter

By | August 22, 2014

Stanley R. Carter, born January 26, 1937, joined the ranks of those in Heaven on the evening of Wednesday, August 20, 2014, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Carrie; his sisters, Lucille and Bonnie; his children, Michael (Charlene) of Zanesville, OH, Ron (Reberta) of Greenfield, OH, Patty Tussing of Ashville, OH, and Kathy (James) Cline of Ashville, OH; his nine grandchildren, Maggie, Annie, Sarah, Jessica, Megan, Zachary, Kess, Elena, and Xander; Uncle Ted Perroud, and many more beloved cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by Frank Carter and Sarah Wood Carter, and nine of his brothers and sisters.

Stanley lived to be outdoors; he loved exploring the wilderness both near and far, hiking and fishing as often as he could, but was equally fulfilled when he could tame it, with a garden that grew larger and more fruitful with each passing year. The love that he had for the fresh air and the world it encompassed only grew when he could share it with the ones he loved, teaching them about the wonders of the world, adventure, and the beauty of the little things that others might pass by without any notice, to ensure that no one would take it for granted for a single moment.

His working life was an accomplished one as well, as he ensured that his work was nothing less than what he loved. He was a source of immense help for those close to him, having built, or at least helped with major fixes for, the homes of those he cared for. His passion for helping others didn’t waver when he left for work, though. The same level of care and devotion was put into building homes for countless families and building businesses so that others could work toward earning their own livelihood. He started out with a business of his own, building a future for his family, and ended his career in a job that covered every need of everyone he provided for. Simply put, Stanley was a carpenter, and as a fixer and a maker of things, he couldn’t have enjoyed anything more.

Far from being just a fixer of things, Stanley was also a fixer of people. He had a large family and loved everyone more than he could ever express. There was nothing he wouldn’t do for a family member or a friend in need, and he wouldn’t accept any excess thanks; to him it was simply the way you treat the ones you love, and the way one is supposed to spread the love of God. He was a relentless provider and teacher to his family, constantly striving to give them the most fulfilling life possible, as well as to nurture them into being the best people they could be, with the values he knew were right. His wisdom will be passed down through the years, as he managed to teach us all the answers to life’s great questions with the simplest of actions.

Stanley was a son, a brother, an uncle, a friend, a husband, a father, and grandfather in only the best sense of the words. He was strong of character, body, and mind; he loved ceaselessly, lived fully, and taught wisely for every moment of his life. Everyone he touched will live with an ache in their heart from his absence, but our lives will be infinitely better for having known him.
