Raleigh Edward Scott

On July 2, 2014, the angels of God embraced Raleigh E. Scott and took him to his heavenly home, surrounded by family. Raleigh Edward Scott, age 81, of Jackson, Ohio, passed away July 2, 2014 at his home after several years of failing health. Raleigh was born October 9, 1932 to John and Effie Scott. He was the eldest son of six children.

He was married on October 19, 1956 to Mary Elizabeth Gilliland who passed away in 2010. They shared their lives together for 53, and raising four babies; Robetta, Vicki, Raleigh Jr., and Randy.

Raleigh proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1952 to 1956 as a Fireman and a Fire Inspector. He always talked about being so proud in serving his country and relived the times with his family and friends and wore a cap to show his patriotism.

Raleigh retired from Southern Ohio Coal in Wilkesville, but always remembered his good friends from there and stayed in touch with them when possible. He worked his farm that he took so much pride in, raising hogs and cattle. Fishing and hunting with his boys and his grandson Peyton were some of his favorite pasttimes.

Raleigh attended and was a member of Trinity Wesleyan Church of Oak Hill, Ohio and leaves behind a host of church family members.

He is survived by his children, Robetta Bragg of Graham, North Carolina, Vicki Scott of Graham, North Carolina, Raleigh (Pamela) Scott Jr. of Jackson, Ohio whom he resided recently with for over a year, and Randy (Elena) Scott of Raleigh, North Carolina; grandchildren, Benjamin (Andi) Bragg of Chauncey, Ohio, Jennifer Coopmans of Chicago, Illinois, Amber Scott of Jackson, Ohio, Peyton Scott of Stem, North Carolina, Joel and Jonathan Alda of Raleigh, North Carolina, Mary Watt of Chauncey, Ohio; great-grandsons, Oliver and Liam Coopmans of Chicago, Illinois; dear brother, Bill (Barbara) Scott of Givens, Ohio; sisters, Barbara Robison of Florida, Betty Tucker of Miami, Ohio, and his special baby sister, Elizabeth (Paul) Wyant of Jackson, Ohio; his best buddy and childhood friend, Albert Schmid of Wheelersburg, Ohio; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Effie Scott; and a sister, Mary Johnson.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, July 7, 2014 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Stan Howard officiating at the Lewis & Gillum Funeral Home of Jackson, Ohio. A military graveside service will follow at Fairmount Cemetery. Friends may call on Sunday, July 6, 2014 from 1 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home.
