Martha Jane (Rhodes) Walke

Martha Jane (Rhodes) Walke, age 58, of Jackson, passed away on June 26, 2014 at the OSU-Wexner Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio. She was born August 29, 1955 in Gallipolis, Ohio, to Robert G. “Duke” and Beatrice (Gettles) Rhodes.

Martha worked at the Jackson County Probate/Juvenile Court for 20 years before fulfilling her life-long dream of becoming an elementary school teacher.

Martha graduated from Wellston High School in 1973. After surviving breast cancer in 1986, she attended the University of Rio Grande, where she received a bachelor’s degree in 1994, followed by a master’s degree in 1997 and the masters-plus-fifteen degree in 2000, all in Elementary Education and Children’s Literature.

She loved teaching, and taught in the Jackson City Schools for nearly 20 years until the time of her death.

In addition to her parents, Martha is survived by her husband of 37 years, Dave Walke; a son, Trent Walke; two sisters, Kathy Miller, of Wellston and Janice Rhodes, of Jackson; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at the Christ United Methodist Church in Jackson with Pastor David Roach officiating. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family at a later date. Friends may call Monday, June 30, 2014 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Lewis & Gillum Funeral Home of Jackson.
