Eddie Jay Hughes

Eddie Jay Hughes, age 88, of Jackson, Ohio, passed away Saturday, June 14, 2014 at Holzer Medical Center of Jackson. He was born October 1, 1925 in Jackson, Ohio to the late Thomas Edward and Grace Edna (Evans) Hughes. He was married to the late Jean Mercer on August 17, 1947.

He graduated from Jackson High School in 1944 where he played football earning ALL-SEOAL honors. He was drafted into the United States Army in which he served during World War II as an Infantryman in the 4th Infantry-101st Division where he saw action in the Philippines and Japan. After returning home he worked at the DT&I car shops and JISCO before starting a 28-year career with the U.S. Post Office. During the 60’s and 70’s he served as City Recreation Director before being elected to the Jackson City Council, also serving as President of Council. Eddie was a member of Christ United Methodist Church. He was a member of several community organizations including the American Legion, Masonic Temple, and the Elks Lodge.

Eddie is survived by his daughter, Betsy Hughes, of Columbus, Ohio; son, Eddie (Charolette) Hughes of Jackson, Ohio; daughter, Bryn Hughes of Galion, Ohio; grandchildren, David Kight, N.J. Kight, Josh (Mary) Bailey, and Chris Bailey; and great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Kory, and Dalton Kight and Paige and Hillary Bailey.

Preceding him in death in addition to his parents was his wife, Jean (Mercer) Hughes; his daughter, Becky (Hughes) Kight; and a second wife, Charmane.

Funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 21, 2014 at 1 p.m. with Mayor Randy Heath officiating at the Lewis & Gillum Funeral Home of Jackson, Ohio. Burial will follow at Fairmount Cemetery. Friends may call on Friday, June 20, 2014 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
