Thomas J. Payne, 75, of Jackson, passed away May 31, 2014, at Heartland of Jackson following a brief illness at the Ohio State University Medical Center. He was born July 22, 1938, in Ironton, Ohio, to the late Merrill O. and Helen Sheets Payne.

Tom was a graduate of Rock Hill High School, Ohio University, and Miami University. He was a revered math teacher at Jackson High School until his retirement in 1991. Tom was a member of the Franklin Valley Golf Club.

Tom is survived by his wife of 55 years, Marilyn (Davis) Payne; his three daughters, Allison (Tim) Carver of Gordonsville, Virginia, Bryn (Gregg) Lapenta of Reno, Nevada, and Megan (Shawn) Richendollar of Jackson. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Dana Carver (Jonathon) Silvey, Tessa Carver (Derek) Teevan, Evan (Sarah) Carver, Julie Richendollar, and Jeni Richendollar; one great-granddaughter, Hayley Silvey; his sister, Janet Adelmann of Columbus; a niece and two nephews, Susan (Adelmann) Kelly of Florida, John Adelmann of Michigan, and David Adelmann of Columbus.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 5, at 1 p.m. with Pastor Dave Roach officiating at Lewis and Gillum Funeral Home of Jackson, Ohio. Friends may call prior to the funeral from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
