Edna Pauline Brown Vorys

Edna Pauline Brown Vorys, 97, of Jackson, Ohio, went home with the Lord on Monday evening, April 28, 2014, at Edgewood Manor of Wellston, Ohio.

She was born in Davisville, Ohio, December 3, 1916, daughter of the late Everett E. Richards who passed away in 1978, and Augusta R. Leach Richards who passed away in 1995. Pauline graduated from Coalton High School 80 years ago in 1934. She enjoyed attending the annual Coalton Alumni dinner with her family and was easily the oldest graduate in attendance. She graduated from Rio Grande College, now Rio Grande University, with a Bachelor of Science degree.

Prior to her teaching profession, Pauline was a licensed realtor and broker in Jackson County. She taught a total of 36 years in Zaleski, Vinton County, Reynoldsburg, and the Wellston City Schools. She was a lifetime member of the Jackson Lioness Club, member of the Jackson County Retired Teachers’ Association, and a member of the Christ United Methodist Church in Jackson where she was a member of the United Methodist Women, and a former member of the Jackson (Ohio) Book Review Club.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Cary H. Brown, in August 1963; her second husband, John C. Vorys, in June 2005; and son-in-law, Timothy L. Walters, in February 2008.

She is survived by a son, Cary Evan Brown (Kay Slinger) of Chillicothe, Ohio; two daughters, Sylvia Brown Walters of Slippery Rock, PA, and Marilyn Brown Jones (Morgan) of Greensboro, NC; a brother, Roger (Eunice) Richards of Bluffton, SC; two sisters, Garnetta (Leonard) Holzapfel of Wellston and Wilma Sims of Hamilton, Ohio; four grandsons, Christopher Walters of Slippery Rock, PA, David Maxwell Walters (Jennifer Smyder) of Pittsburgh, PA, Justin Brown (Kari Hacker) of Durham, NC, and Ian Brown (Elena Donoso-Brown) of Pittsburgh, PA; a great-grandson, Evan Jose Brown; and also surviving are three nephews and two nieces.

A celebration of Pauline’s life will be held at the Christ United Methodist Church in Jackson on Saturday, May 31 at 1 p.m. with Pastor Janie Karl officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 11:30 a.m. until the time of services. The family suggests memorial contributions in Pauline’s memory may be made to one of her favorite places, the Markay Cultural Arts Center, c/o Southern Hills Arts Council, 269 East Main Street, P.O. Box 149, Jackson, Ohio 45640. Arrangements are by the Jenkins Funeral Chapel of Wellston.
