Cherie M. Matthews

Cherie M. Matthews, age 80, of Wellston, passed away Friday, May 10, 2013, at her winter home in Port Charlotte, Florida. She was born June 14, 1932 in Athens, Ohio, to the late Samuel Grover Munn and Flossie Fern Vernon Munn.

Cherie was a graduate of Athens High School and then went on to become a Licensed Practical Nurse. In 1964, Cherie, along with her husband Robin, founded and built the Wellston Nursing Home on North Park Avenue in Wellston. She continued working there as the administrator until the sale of the facility in 1985. Cherie loved her winter home in Port Charlotte, as well as spending time with and enjoying her grandchildren and pets. She was a member of the Hope United Methodist Church in Wellston.

Cherie is survived by her husband of 61 years, Robin T. Matthews; son, Arthur T. Matthews of Dayton; daughter, Kathryn A. Walton of Wellston; grandchildren, Matt Walton of Port Charlotte, Fla., Bryan K. Matthews, of Midland, Texas, Jonathan T. Matthews of Dayton and Victoria M. Matthews-Courter of Dayton, as well as her niece and nephews, Becky Wadsworth Munn of Kansas, Bruce Munn of Kansas, Mark Munn of Washington State and Phillip Munn of Tennessee.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Robert F. “Bobby” Walton and her brother and sister-in-law, Vernon and Esther Munn.

Calling hours will be Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. at the McWilliams Funeral Home in Wellston. Funeral service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the McWilliams Funeral Home with Pastor David Kelly officiating. Burial will follow in the Alexander Cemetery.
