Karen S. Lackey, age 72, of Wellston, passed away Tuesday, March 15, 2022, at Ayden Healthcare of Jackson. She was born August 10, 1949, in Gallipolis, Ohio, daughter of the late George H. Lackey and Helen I. Kriebel Lackey. Karen graduated from Wellston High School with the class of 1967 and received a bachelor’s degree in education from Wright State University in 1981. Karen started her working career in the office at Central Elementary, where her father was the school principal. Following 32 years of employment, she retired from the Wellston City Schools, where she was an aide for 10 years and an educator teaching first grade and reading lab at Bundy Elementary for 22 years. Karen was a member of the Wellston Teacher’s Association and had the honor of being named “Wellston’s Teacher of the Year” for making a difference in the lives of so many of her first-grade students at the beginning of their education and throughout their journey in school. Karen always enjoyed and looked forward to the gatherings with her friends, former co-workers and educators on a regular basis at her home and at Lee’s Restaurant.
She is survived by brothers and sisters-in-law: Jim and Bev Lackey and Mike and Debbie Lackey; niece and nephews: Lori Hamon (Mark), Scott Lackey (Tracy Fee), Jordan Lackey (Sabrina Adkins) and Justin Lackey (Amanda Schreckengost); great-nieces and great-nephews: Cameron and Connor Hamon, Lexie, Natalie and Emily Lackey, and Sophia Lackey; as well as a host of friends. Besides her parents, Karen was preceded in death by her great-niece, Allyson Nicole Hamon and her aunt, Audrey Parker.
Calling hours will be Saturday, March 19, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the McWilliams Funeral Home in Wellston. Funeral services will follow the calling hours at 12 p.m. with Pastor Tim Jones officiating. Burial will be in the Ridgewood Cemetery.
