Verna Fulton, age 95, of Wellston, Ohio, went peacefully with her Lord on Tuesday morning, March 30, 2021, at Jenkins Care Community in Wellston. She was born in Letcher County, Kentucky, on December 26, 1925, to the late Creed Flannery McFall and Maggie Jane Bentley McFall.
Verna and her late husband, Frank, operated the Fulton’s Grocery Store from 1959 until 1985 in Coalton, Ohio. Following Frank’s death in 1988, Verna moved to Wellston where she enjoyed eating lunch and playing games at the Wellston Senior Citizens Center. She was a former Coal Festival Senior Citizen Queen, as she is pictured in her photo. She loved spending time with her family, talking with people, and doing oil and acrylic paintings of mountains, barns, and the rural countryside. She was baptized at, and a member of, the Wellston Freewill Baptist Church.
Besides her parents and husband, Verna was preceded in death by a brother, Jesse McFall; a sister, Inez Gibson; a half-brother, Edgar McFall; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Iris and Dennis Mason; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Willard and Jewel Fulton and Claud and Pricey Fulton; and brother-in-law, Ivan Meachem.
She is survived by a son, Robert Fulton (Debbie) of Largo, Florida; two daughters, Henrietta Scharfenberger (Dave) of Wellston and Ramona Baker (Jim) of Beckley, West Virginia; beloved sister-in-law, Mary Ann Meachem; six grandchildren: Desiree Baker Johnson, Jimmy Baker, Michelle Scharfenberger McManaway (Randy), Scott Scharfenberger (Amy), Alicia Fulton Booth, and Robert Fulton; nine great-grandchildren: Tanishia Snyder Palma, Rob Snyder, Chelsea and Derek McManaway, Annabelle and Wyatt Booth, and Nicholas, Tommy, and Dory Scharfenberger; and several great-great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
A private visitation will be held at the Jenkins Funeral Chapel in Wellston on Friday, April 2, followed by graveside services, officiated by Pastor Don Kincaid at the Evergreen Cemetery. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Wellston Freewill Baptist Church, 1206 South Vermont Avenue, Wellston, Ohio 45692, in Verna’s memory.
