Harold E. “Buzz” Fisher, Jr., age 72, of Oak Hill, Ohio, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Friday, Jan. 15, 2021 at Holzer Hospital in Gallipolis. He was born Oct. 15, 1948 in Oak Hill to the late Harold E. Fisher, Sr. and Easter “Betty” (Scott) Fisher.
Buzz graduated from Oak Hill High School in 1966. He then served in the United States Navy, 1966-1971. While serving in the Navy he married the love of his life, Barbara Sue (Newsome) Fisher. After leaving the Navy, he went to Ohio University and studied broadcasting. He was a man of many talents and trades. He was a business owner of a gas station and also a pizza restaurant, he was a DJ, he played for a minor league baseball team, he coached various youth sports in Oak Hill, was a custodian at Hope Haven and Oak Hill Schools, a bus driver for Hope Haven and Oak Hill Schools, he worked for The Jackson Herald newspaper, he wrote for The Portsmouth Times, The Times-Journal, The Jackson Times and The Telegram newspapers, worked at Kali’s pizza for 28 years, and he was an in-school suspension teacher at Oak Hill Schools. Buzz was very well known for his broadcasting, starting in 1971 and retiring in 2018 because of his declining health. He was also elected and served as the Mayor of Oak Hill, 1988-1992.
He is survived by his daughters, Leslie Sue (Paul) Rice, of Wellston, Ohio, Cheryl Lynn (Larry) McCoy, of Oak Hill, Ohio, and Tara Dawn (Mike) Abrams, of Jackson, Ohio; grandchildren, Jessica Lynn McCoy, Megan Sue Rice, Aaron Michael Abrams, Laura Leigh Abrams, Kendra Dawn Abrams, and Emily Paige Abrams; great-grandchildren, Austin Michael McCoy, Joseph Hunter Woods, Cheyenne Hafer, Avery Lashae Abrams, Bryleigh Sue Louise Abrams, and two great-grandchildren on the way, Addilyn Paige Hafer and Avalona Rose Abrams; sister, Karen (Ken) Carpenter, of Logan; best friend and like a brother, Jim (Ellen) King, of Jackson; brothers-in-law, Bennett Newsome, of South Webster and Dennis Newsome, of Jackson, Michigan; sister-in-law, Patsy Newsome, of Jackson, Ohio, as well as several other relatives, nieces, nephews and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Barbara Sue (Newsome) Fisher; sister, Vicky Gould; granddaughter, Brittany Paige Rice; and grandson, Larry Edward McCoy.
Friends may call at the Lewis & Gillum Funeral Home of Oak Hill on Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2021 from 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2021 at 1 p.m. with Pastor Stan Howard officiating. Burial will follow at C.M. Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the funeral home to help with expenses.
