Joe Edward Goheen, age 82, of Coalton, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2019 at the Adena Regional Medical Center in Chillicothe. He was born in Jackson County on March 23, 1937 to the late George E. and Viola (Ritchie) Goheen. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Janet A. Fannin; two brothers: Tommy and Al Goheen; a sister, Sharon Straten, and brother-in-law, Lucas (Brenda) Cook.
He is survived by his wife, Elma (Cook) Goheen; his son, Wade E. Goheen (fiance – Lauren A. Haga) and their children, Andrew and Sam Haga; son-in-law, James Fannin; grandchildren: Matthew, Megan, Kyle and Kevin; and great-grandchildren: Akina, Akira and Rew. Also surviving are his sisters: Freda G. Baisden and Eileen Goheen; sister-in-law, Pauline (Jim) Ray; brothers-in-law: Bill (Barb) Cook, Walt (Rosetta) Cook and Larry (Bonnie) Cook; along with many nieces and nephews.
He loved writing songs which were based on his own life experiences and those of others. He played music and sang all around Jackson, and throughout Ohio and West Virginia. He taught many others to play music. He also enjoyed drawing and spending time with special friends: Scott Cook, Jim Ferguson, his cousin – Jimmy Goheen, Eddie Fisher and Fred Wilson. Many thanks to the Baisden family for their frequent casual conversations while passing by.
Funeral services will be held at the Mayhew-Brown Funeral Home on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 1 p.m. with Rev. Jack Hughes officiating. Burial will follow at Coalton Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Mayhew-Brown Funeral Home on Friday, Nov. 15 from 5 to 8 p.m.
