Wilma Jean Peoples, age 80, of Wellston, passed away Sunday, June 12, 2016, at her home. She was born September 14, 1935 in Wellston, Ohio to the late Ernest Paul Merrill and Virginia Eleanor Reed Merrill.
Wilma was a 1953 graduate of Wellston High School where she was a majorette for the Wellston Marching Rockets. She was a former bookkeeper and cashier at Frazee’s Supermarket in Wellston and for the Village of Hamden, and she was also a former cook at the Fairgreens Country Club.
Wilma loved making crafts and decorating. She was an avid Wellston Rockets fan, who was a former Boy Scout leader and den mother. Wilma was a member of the American Legion Post 371 Ladies Auxiliary and she formerly attended the Hope United Methodist Church.
Wilma is survived by two sons, Jeff Merrill (Jackie) of Wellston and Roger Wilbur (Effie) of Hamden; six grandchildren, Brett Merrill of Wellston, Brodie Merrill of Wheelersburg, Amy Limle of Londonderry, Abby Strausbaugh of Kingston, Roger Wilbur of Hamden and Tabitha Wilbur of Columbus; 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; brother, Roger Merrill of Springfield; sister, Sandra White of McArthur, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Wilma was preceded in death by her brothers, Paul Ernest Merrill, Frank Merrill and Eldon Merrill.
Calling hours were set for Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the McWilliams Funeral Home in Wellston. Funeral service will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the McWilliams Funeral Home with Pastor Jamie Fortner officiating. Burial will follow in the Ridgewood Cemetery.
