Maxine Angles, 91, of Wellston, passed away on Friday, May 20, 2016, at Jenkins Care Community in Wellston. She was born on February 27, 1925 in Wellston, Ohio, daughter of the late George Sr. and Stella (Scurlock) Darling. Maxine was a 1943 graduate of Wellston High School. She retired from Big Bear Grocery Stores after 18 years of service working in the meat department and as a cashier.
Maxine was very active. She was an exquisite cook and gardener. In fact, just last year at 91 years young, she planted a garden, raising beautiful tomato plants. She was also planning to trim the hedges at her home, but was stopped by her younger sister, Jenny. Maxine enjoyed BINGO, working crossword puzzles, and spending time with her family.
She is survived by her sister, Jenny Lucas; several nieces and nephews: Andrea “Andie” (Melvin) Ervin, Debbie Darling, David Darling, Melissa Applegate, Linda Arocha, and Thomas “Butch” Applegate; several great-nieces and nephews, including Travis (Natalia) Downard and Luke (Angie) Downard; as well as one very special little girl, great-great-niece, Jayla Downard, who was the apple of Maxine’s eye.
In addition to her parents, Maxine was preceded in death by her husband, Everett Angles in 1983; two brothers, Eugene “Tootle” Darling and George Darling, Jr.; sisters, Helen Melvin and Shirley Applegate; as well as nephew, Gary Wynn and nieces, Randi Downard and Janet Jayjohn.
A memorial service celebrating Maxine’s life will be held at R.M. Williams Funeral Service, 120 W. Broadway St., Wellston, at the convenience of the family during a later time.
