Herschel T. Griffith, age 91, of Hamden, Ohio, passed away Saturday, March 10, 2012, at his residence. He was born October 14, 1920 in McDowell, Kentucky, the son of the late Wayne and Virginia Clay Griffith. Herschel was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during WW II, and was retired from Crownover Lumber in McArthur.
Herschel is survived by his wife of 68 years, Ruby Terry Griffith; children, Kenner Griffith (Carolyn) of Newport, Ky., Linda Lightfoot, (Harry) of Hamden, Bonnie Hill of Wellston, Shirley Chesser of McArthur, James Griffith (Kathleen) of Warsaw, Ind., Donna Ashton (Barry) of Warsaw, Ind., Michael Griffith of Wabash, Ind., Tina Harless of Hamden and Patty Blessing (Larry) of Londonderry; brothers, Paul Griffith and Truman Griffith, both of Kentucky; sisters, Glorafaye Sheperd and Doris Slone, both of Kentucky, as well as 144 combined grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Herschel was preceded in death by sons, Anthony Griffith and Danny Griffith; grandson, Jason Griffith; sister, Audrey Thomas; and brothers, Dewey, Buddy, Cletus, Jimmy and Bobby Griffith. Calling hours will be Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the McWilliams Funeral Home in Wellston. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the McWilliams Funeral Home with Rev. Jerry Griffith, Jr. officiating. Burial, with military honors, will be in the Centerpoint Cemetery.
