Charlotte Bowman Sargeant

Charlotte Bowman Sargeant, 73, passed away on Dec. 25, 2020 in Charlotte, NC.

She was born July 6, 1947 and spent her childhood in Oak Hill, Ohio – in a home filled with six children with whom she shared a strong bond throughout her life. She left her small-town community in 1965 for Ohio University and earned her BA in 1969. She later earned a Master’s Degree in Education at The Ohio State University. During those years she took flying lessons and earned her pilot’s license, taking lessons with her father. They soloed on the same day.

She taught physical education in the Dublin School system for seven years, where she also coached girls in gymnastics and track to the state tournaments. In 1975, she organized and managed the girls’ Ohio Gymnastics Tournament, held at the Dublin High School.

In 1976, she married Richard Sargeant and moved to the Toledo area to begin 44 years of marriage, family and community life. After moving to the Toledo area, she sold real estate for the Danbury company for a few years until the children started coming. Her attention and focus for many years thereafter centered around raising her children. Throughout her life, she was an active and competitive participant in tennis and golf – making good and long-lasting friends while doing so. Her friends admitted sometimes ruefully that if a few dollars or trophies were added to the competition, Charlotte’s performance and scores would noticeably improve.

While nurturing her four children with her husband, Charlotte stayed active in real estate, rehabbing and renting houses in the Toledo area. Later she shifted her attention to real estate in southern Florida – Marco Island and the Ft. Lauderdale area with her brother, Dan.

When the last of the children started leaving her Maumee home, Charlotte studied for and earned status as a Certified Financial Planner and started Heritage Financial Advisors, a financial advisory company. She built the company into a substantial enterprise, which, while headquartered and focused in northwest Ohio, additionally served and continues to serve clients across the country.

Although Charlotte grew up in a small town in southern Ohio and was educated and taught in central Ohio, the Toledo area was her adopted community. It was there that she raised her family, pursued her business interests and volunteered.

When Charlotte began her retirement from her financial advisory responsibilities, she enjoyed spending Ohio’s cold winters with her husband in their home on Marco Island, FL. In 2018, Charlotte and her husband relocated from northwest Ohio to Charlotte, NC.

Charlotte is survived by her husband Richard, daughter Molly (Jeff) Rupp (Delaware, OH), son Michael (Los Angeles, CA), daughter Jennifer (Tom) Di Lello (Charlotte, NC), and daughter Anne Sargeant (Chicago, IL). She is survived also by her beloved grandchildren, Lillian, Ruby, Nicholas and Jonathan, and her brothers, Keith Bowman, Phil (Diana) Bowman, and Brian (Sally) Bowman, and her sister Rita (Richard) Edwards. She was preceded in death by her father Harold, her mother Marjorie, and her brother Daniel.

Charlotte was a beloved wife, mother and grandmother to her family, a friend to many and a hardworking and successful entrepreneur. She embraced the values of family and long-term friendships and invested in them. Her life was full and meaningful, and she blessed those with whom she shared it.

A memorial service celebrating Charlotte’s life will be held at a later date.
