(Buckeye) Roger Ray Hammond, 84, of Jackson, passed away on Thursday, March 14, 2019 at the Jenkins Care Community after a brief illness. He was born in Scioto County, Ohio on Feb. 17, 1935 to the late Claude and Harriet (Johnson) Hammond, of Portsmouth, Ohio. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Dorothy Lewallen of Wheelersburg.
Roger was a 1953 graduate of Portsmouth High School and attended the Ohio University. He retired from RCI in the year 2005 and worked in real estate for many years. He was the owner of Roger Hammond Realty and co-owner of Mark Roger Enterprises. Roger also owned and operated Handy Mart for 20-plus years. He originally came to Jackson with Schaffer’s Grocery Store and made Jackson his family’s home.
Roger was a devoted member of Jackson Apostolic Church. He was a long-standing member and past president of the Jackson Lions Club. He dedicated 65 years of his life to his wife, Wanda Hall, who survives. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends cheering on the Jackson Ironmen and the OSU Buckeyes.
In addition to his wife, Wanda, he is survived by two brothers: Jim (Kaye) Hammond and Terry (Judy) Hammond; children: Rhoda (Steve) Evans, Rhonda (Gary) Roseberry, of Jackson and Mark (Kandy) Hammond of Troy; four granddaughters: Sarah-Beth (Leighton) Murphy, Leah Evans, Lindsey (David) Shotts and Allison Roseberry; and six great-grandchildren, all of Jackson. Roger is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at the Mayhew-Brown Funeral Home on Thursday, March 21 at 11 a.m. with burial to follow. Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, March 20 from 4 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Jackson Apostolic Church, 156 N.
