Elizabeth “Betsey” Haynes, age 81, passed away at her home in Jackson, Ohio on Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2018.

A consummate mother, grandmother and homemaker, Betsey was an excellent baker and enjoyed preparing her famous sweet treats for her family, friends, and neighbors. Her most requested included her chocolate chip cookies, Alaska brownies, Jesus birthday cake, and apple bread with the crunchy cinnamon topping.

Her love of travel included regular trips on her favorite cruise ship, a steamboat, The American Queen. Whenever it would dock in Marietta, Betsey was sure to be there to greet its arrival and board to see her many friends among the ship’s crew and entertainers. An avid swimmer, she rarely missed a day in the pool to swim her laps, be it in the Hillcrest Pool during the summer or at the local Days Inn during the winter. Playing the piano gave her great pleasure as she escaped into the music of Johnnie Ray, Irving Berlin, George Gershwin or a famous Broadway hit by Richard Rogers. She was a devoted sports fan and enjoyed watching University of Notre Dame football, the Cleveland Indians, and the Cleveland Cavaliers. She was always proud that LeBron graduated from “her” high school. Betsey was a voracious reader and she had a passion inherited from her father for gardening, especially roses.

Betsey had an unwavering faith in God. She was a member of St. Peter & St. Paul Church. Over the years, she had become very involved with the church and assisted with parish education and many church organized events.

She was born in Akron to the late Richard Stephen Botzum and Elizabeth Barry Botzum on Feb. 23, 1936. After graduating from St. Vincent High School, she attended University of Akron where she met her loving husband, Lloyd “Skip” Haynes. They were united in marriage on April 19, 1958. Skip preceded her in death on Oct. 24, 2016. They were married for 58 blissful years. She was also predeceased by her son, Richard (Marilyn) Haynes, who passed away on Dec. 18, 2016.

Betsey is survived by her son Stephen (Natalie) Haynes of Shaker Heights, Ohio, son Mark (Sherry) Haynes of Coppell, Texas, her two granddaughters, Browning and Parker Haynes, and her sister, Marilyn Mikolashek of Cape Coral, Florida.
