Charles Michael “Mike” Massie

Charles Michael “Mike” Massie, age 80, of Wellston, departed this life on Sunday, March 20, 2016, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born September 16, 1935 in Wellston, Ohio to the late Homer DeWitt Massie and Clara Campbell Massie.

A devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Mike was a 1954 graduate of Wellston High School and attended the University of Dayton. Mike was a veteran of the United States Army, of which he was a proud member of the Honor Guard. He was a former employee of CDD of Columbus and a 30-year employee of Western Southern Life Insurance.

Mike was an enthusiastic fan of all Wellston High School athletic programs, especially the football program. He was a member of the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Wellston, as well as a member of many clubs and organizations throughout his lifetime including the Wellston Rotary Club, the Fairgreens Country Club and the Wellston Downtown Coaches Booster Club. Mike was also an avid golfer.

He is survived by his best friend and loving wife of 57 years, Patty Clark Massie; daughter, Michelle Walburn (Brad) of Wellston; sons, Michael Massie (Jill) of Wellston and Scott Massie (Doreen) of Fairport, New York. Mike leaves behind nine grandchildren, Lindsay Walburn Mantell (Jason), Courtney Walburn (Chris Hutchinson), Jacob Walburn (Marie), Alex Massie Brennan (Erron), Kaitlyn Massie (Chris Carman), Sean Massie, Ryan Massie, Tyler Massie and Trevor Massie; and step-granddaughter, Casey Walburn Minear (Troy). Mike was also affectionately known as Poppy by his great-grandchildren, Mykenna, Katelyn, Braden, Cadynce, Ella, Mia, Piper, Sloan, Jake and Drew. He is also survived by his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Sandy and Robert Mullins of Wilkesville; brother-in-law, Charles McCoppin of Hamden; special nephew, Jim Pope (Peggy Murdoch) of Wellston, as well as several other nieces, nephews and friends, including his special friends at the morning table at Lee’s Steakhouse.

Besides his parents, Mike was preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Joan and Joe Blake; brother and sister-in-law, William and Jane Massie; father-in-law and mother-in-law, James and Beatrice Clark; and several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, two nieces and one nephew.

In keeping with Mike’s wishes, his body was cremated. Visitation with the family will be held Wednesday from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the McWilliams Funeral Home in Wellston, where rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. A memorial mass will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church with Father Donald Maroon officiating. Burial will follow in the Ridgewood Cemetery with military honors by the combined units of the American Legion Post 371 of Wellston and the DAV Jackson County Chapter 45.
