Helen Virginia Humphreys Adkins

Helen Virginia Humphreys Adkins, age 91, formerly of 228 N. High Street, passed away at 3 a.m. December 1, 2015 at the Edgewood Manor in Wellston, Ohio. She was born in Coalton, Ohio on February 2, 1924; daughter of the late Jerry Humphreys and Kathryn Miller Humphreys Christian.

Surviving are daughter, Brenda Willis and special friend, Tony Drake of Thurman, Ohio; a son, Jerry N. Humphreys and wife of Kentucky; grandchildren: Christopher Himelrick of Columbus, Ohio; James and Magda Humphreys of Peoria, Arizona; Andy Humphreys of Indiana; Jennie Mae Meade of Springfield, Ohio; and two great-grandchildren: Brandy and Rheuben Meade of Springfield, Ohio.

Also surviving are her brother, Sam and wife Betty Humphreys of Marion, Ohio; a sister-in-law and special friend, Phyllis Humphreys of Xenia, Ohio; and a brother, Bob Humphreys and wife Karen of Jackson, Ohio. There are also 16 nieces and nephews and 45 great- and great-great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by brothers: Lewis and Marie Humphreys, Thomas and Deloris Humphreys, Franklin and Josephine Humphreys, Bill and Mary Humphreys; sisters: Wanda and Cletus McGinnis, Betty Piatt, Irene Taylor, Wylodine Combs and Kathryn Filsinger; daughter-in-law, Sally Humphreys; son-in-law, Chuck Willis; grandson, Jerry Humphreys; nephew, Chad Humphreys, and nieces, Carlotta S. Moore and Jodi Lynn Humphreys.

Helen was a veteran of WW II, serving two years as a Navy Medic SC. Prior to going into the Navy, she worked at the National Fireworks Corp. She worked as a cook for Jolly Lanes Restaurant for over 20 years; worked as a cook at the Fairgreens Country Club and the Hamburger Inn. She did home care and housecleaning in the Jackson area. She was a member of Wills Chapel Church in Wellston, Ohio and continued going to church until her death. She was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 45 and a life member of the Jackson American Legion Post 81.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 5, at the Mayhew-Brown Funeral Home in Jackson, with Rev. Dick Moore officiating. Burial will follow at Fairmount Cemetery with military services by the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 45. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the service time. There will be a family gathering at Disabled American Veterans after the funeral.
