By | November 26, 2015

Alice Elaine Benzinger Shumard was born April 1, 1931 in Cincinnati, Ohio. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Samuel B. Shumard, their daughters and sons-in-law, Sally Shumard and John Gibbs (Richmond, Virginia) and Susan and Mark Krieger (Arlington, VA). She is also survived by her three grandchildren Samuel Taylor Gibbs, Victoria Rebecca Krieger, and Emma Katherine Tatone Krieger; one brother and three sisters: Jo Ann Viox of Milford, Alvina (Dan) Fagin of St. Mary’s, Sam (Sandy) Benzinger of Lebanon, and Cheri (Kenny) Roberts of Ripley. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Rebecca Lynn, and both of her parents, Elaine Josephine Kingham Benzinger and Albert George Benzinger.

Alice graduated from the College of Mount St. Joseph in 1953. Her work career included teaching school, serving as deputy director of the Jackson County Board of Elections, and co-owning a marina and beach concession business with Sam.

An astute learner, Alice was smart and funny and loved verbally debating any and all issues – she carried strong opinions and took great pleasure sharing them so everyone knew how she felt. She was fiercely devoted to the safety and well-being of her family, and made it her mission to help each become a better person. She will be remembered lovingly by her family as “The Boss”.

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Sunday, November 29, 2015 at the Mayhew-Brown Funeral Home with Rev. Janie Karl officiating and burial to follow in the Fairmount Cemetery.
