Margaret H. Ray

Margaret H. Ray, age 84, of Jackson, Ohio, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, September 6, 2015. She was born August 12, 1931 in Honolulu, Hawaii to the late Arthur and Helen (Ishihara) Nicely.

Margaret grew up in Pearl City on the island of Oahu. At the age of 12, she was a witness to the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The family pet, a German Shepard named “Girlie” was drafted into the Army after the war was declared in the Pacific. The dog received an honorable discharge and was returned to the family after the war was over.

Margaret met and married Frederick Ray who precedes her in death, in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1954. Margaret was a supportive and loving Navy wife and from that gathered many friends over the years from coast to coast. She loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and always had an open door policy at the farm. She enjoyed scrapbooking, bingo, and shopping.

Margaret is survived by her daughter, Catherine Bird of Canal Winchester, Ohio; grandchildren: Frederick (Jan Marie) Bird of Liberty, Texas, Douglas (Debbie) Bird of Wellston, Ohio, and Serena Miller (Tony Padar) of Cleveland, Texas; great-grandchildren: Katie Miller of Wellston, Ohio and Olivia Miller of Jackson, Ohio; a brother, James (Nancy) Nicely of Mission Viejo, California; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by a brother, Arthur Nicely Jr.

Calling hours will be held on Saturday, September 12, 2015 from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Lewis & Gillum Funeral Home of Jackson. A service will be held on Sunday, September 13, 2015 at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery.
