Sammie Edward Kennedy

PFC Sammie Edward Kennedy, 94, of McArthur, Ohio, departed this life on Thursday, February 21, 2013, at the home of his son, Ernie Anderson in Troutman, NC.

He was born on May 12, 1918, to Edward and Tessie Kennedy of Henderson, KY. A WW II veteran, he was in the first wave of the invasion at Okinawa. While in the U.S. Army he received numerous medals including two Bronze Stars and he also served in the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Kennedy retired from Commercial Carriers Auto Transport in Detroit, MI and Oakland, CA after 30 years of service.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Violet; sisters, Anna Mae Guill and Vinie Guill; brothers, James Owens and Norris Taylor; and nieces, Nancy Caine and Verbal LaBate.

He is survived by his sons, Ernie Anderson (Terry) of Troutman, NC, Roy Anderson (Rhonda) of Sitka, Alaska; grandchildren, Elliot and Lindsey of Sitka, Alaska, Mark, Matthew, and Tommy of Troutman, NC; sister, Virginia King of Indiana; and great-nieces, Roxanne Toy (Allen), Gail Zehner, Melissa Caine, Jennifer Hauke, and Doris Fields.

The Kennedy family was served locally by the Huntley & Cremeens Funeral Home in Wellston, where an hour of visitation was to take place Monday, February 25 with a service, officiated by Rev. Herman Stewart, to follow at 2 p.m. Burial will be in the Baisden Family Cemetery near Glen Roy.
