Dennis L. Whetstone

Dennis L. Whetstone, age 66, of Jackson, passed away early Monday, Feb. 22, 2021 at his home after a brief battle with cancer.  He was born June 4, 1954 in Chillicothe to the late Ona Mae (Detty) Whetstone and Arthur Sherman Whetstone.

He was a graduate of Wellston High School, Class of 1973.  After high school he was employed at Banquet Foods which eventually became General Mills, where he was employed as a lead in the special skills maintenance shop for 39 years.  

Dennis was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.  He was known for his gentle and kind spirit, his strong work ethic, his love of nature and being outdoors, as well as his ability to make or build anything he put his mind to.    

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Cheryl (Gillum) Whetstone; his daughter, Kelli (Bradley) Wilson; his son, Adam (Marija) Whetstone; and two granddaughters, Claire Whetstone and Perry Wilson.  He is also survived by brothers, Sherman and Larry (Shannon) Whetstone; and one sister, Glorie Collins as well as many beloved in-laws, nieces, nephews, and their children.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ona and Arthur Whetstone and a brother, Gary Whetstone.  He was also preceded in death by his mother and father in-law, Marilyn “Jean” Gillum and Perry “Buck” Gillum and his brother-in-law, Michael Gillum.

Friends may call Thursday, Feb. 25, 2021 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Lewis & Gillum Funeral Home of Jackson.  Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 26, 2021 at the funeral home with Pastor Jack Hughes officiating.  Burial will follow in Fairmount Cemetery. 

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that a tree be planted in Dennis’ memory.  Per CDC guidelines and governor recommendations, everyone is required to wear a mask and practice proper social distancing.  Online condolences may be sent to www.lewisgillum.com
