Stephen B. Claar

Stephen B. Claar, age 91, of Wellston, passed away Monday, March 7, 2016, at his home. He was born May 17, 1924 in Columbus, Ohio, the son of the late James Berkley “Bert” Claar and Ollie Davis Claar.

Steve was a 1942 graduate of Wellston High School and a veteran of the United States Army, having served during WW II. He retired from the Columbia Gas Company following 35 years of employment. Steve was a member of the Black Diamond Lodge #538 F&AM for over 50 years.

He is survived by his two daughters, Jannie Exner (Joel) of The Villages, Fla. and Stephanie Lindsay (Bert) of Pickerington; grandchildren, Melissa Phillips, Nathan Gaskill, Dustin Lindsay, Ashleigh Behnke and Stephen Lindsay; great-grandchildren, Alli and Christian Johnson, Isabella and Zoe Lindsay; Silas, Josiah and Samuel Behnke, and Judah, Elijah and Jael Lindsay; sister, Betty Lou King of Wellston; sisters-in-law, Laura Mae Hollberg and Gladys Ankrom, both of Wellston; special friend and caregiver, Debbie Perkins, along with several nieces, nephews and friends.

Besides his parents, Steve was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Mary Ann Ankrom Claar in 1992.

Calling hours will be Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the McWilliams Funeral Home in Wellston. Funeral service will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the McWilliams Funeral Home with Pastor Steve Mathews officiating. Burial will follow in the Ridgewood Cemetery with military honors by the combined units of the American Legion Post 371 of Wellston and the DAV Jackson County Chapter 45.
