John Russell Thompson, age 70, of Wellston, passed away Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. He was born May 23, 1948 in Floyd County, Kentucky, son of the late Russell Isaac Thompson and Helen Hale Thompson.
John was a 1966 graduate of Allensville High School and was a former surveyor for the State of Ohio. He enjoyed coon hunting and was a member of the Jackson County Coon Club. John also enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Ruth A. Vollmer Thompson; five sons, Russell Paul Thompson of Kentucky, John Isaac Thompson (Allie) of Florida, Paul Benton Thompson of Kentucky, Phillip Ray Thompson (Michelle) of Wellston, and Isaac John Thompson (Susan) of Wellston; seven grandchildren, Braley, Madilyn, Macy, Bryce, Emma, Owen, and Lila; sister, Sue Moore (John); brothers, Jack Thompson (Carol), Terry Thompson (Debra), and Larry Thompson; along with several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Besides his parents, John was preceded in death by his sister, Robin Thompson.
