Edith Ernestine (Simpson) Sheward

Edith Ernestine (Simpson) Sheward, age 90, of Jackson, passed away on Sunday, May 20, 2018 at Holzer Medical Center in Jackson. She was born on Dec. 20, 1927 to the late Edward and Edith (Leach) Simpson.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Sheward; her son, Tom Sheward; sisters, Helen Mapes and Martha Yates; and brothers, Charles Simpson, Joe Simpson and Lewis Simpson.

Throughout Edith’s eventful life, spanning a dramatic period of historic change in science, politics, technology, and art, she maintained a fresh perspective and positive outlook that won her immense respect of her loving family and many friends. She spent her time wisely, always balancing the importance of family, work ethic and community service, which was demonstrated through her perseverance as a homemaker, a valued employee of G.C Murphy’s store, and a member of the Christ United Methodist Church and it’s Women’s Society. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, an avid seamstress, pie baker and found joy in gardening, especially her flowers.

She encouraged those around her through her strength of character, for she overcame each new challenge with admirable steadfastness. Edith shaped a memorable and happy life. She was a loving wife to her husband, the late Russell Sheward, a devoted mother to her two sons, Bill and the late Tom, and she was an affectionate grandmother to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her son, William “Bill” (Kathy) Sheward, grandchildren, Jenny (Erik) Massie, Sarah (Patrick) Muffley and Michael Sheward; great-grandchildren, Evan Massie, Cole Massie, Aidan Massie and Lauren Muffley; sisters, Wylodine Perkins and Nellie Brisker (Arlen); and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday, May 23, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Fairmount Cemetery with Rev. Janie Karl officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Christ United Methodist Church, 150 Portsmouth St., Jackson, Ohio 45640.
