{"id":3094,"date":"2013-05-11T08:21:47","date_gmt":"2013-05-11T12:21:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jacksoncountyohiogen.com\/members\/?p=3094"},"modified":"2013-05-11T08:21:47","modified_gmt":"2013-05-11T12:21:47","slug":"rendezvous-at-the-rock-celebration-held-at-leo-petroglyph","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jacksoncountyohiogen.com\/members\/2013\/05\/11\/rendezvous-at-the-rock-celebration-held-at-leo-petroglyph\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Rendezvous at the Rock&#8221; celebration held at Leo Petroglyph"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>JACKSON\u2014 Unlike last year&#8217;s &#8220;Rendezvous at the Rock&#8221;, which was a\u00a0cold overcast day with\u00a0approaching thunderstorms, this year the weather was perfect.<\/p>\n<p>A large crowd gathered for the 3rd annual &#8220;Rendezvous at the Rock&#8221;\u00a0event, which is a celebration of fort ancient and Native-American cultures held at Leo Petroglyph State Memorial Park.\u00a0The event was free to the public and consisted of Native American entertainment throughout the day, along with exhibits and demonstrations.<\/p>\n<p>At the site folks got to check out the Leo Petroglyphs, which are some of the most outstanding examples of Fort Ancient Indian art found in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>The Country Carving Boys done demonstrations called \u201cchain saw art\u201d while Chris Cook had exhibits on his &#8220;stone carving&#8221; methods and techniques.\u00a0Ray Streischek gave lessons using the ancient weapon known as the atlatl.<\/p>\n<p>There was delicious food and beverages provided by the Jackson Historical Society. Some of the food\u00a0included \u201cPetro Pups\u201d (hotdogs), \u201cFlint Chips\u201d (potato chips), \u201cGlyph\u201d (Cookies) and \u201cMastodon Munchies\u201d (donut) and \u201cPrehistoric Popcorn\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>This year the\u00a0Friends of Leo\u00a0Petroglyph dedicated an\u00a0additional to the park.\u00a0The additional was a\u00a04.6 acre piece of property, which was\u00a0purchased\u00a0by Friends of Leo\u00a0Petroglyph with the help of some generous donors.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0dedication for the land took place during the\u00a0&#8220;Rendezvous at the Rock&#8221; event by way of a\u00a0ribbon cutting ceremony. Present for the cutting of the ribbon were\u00a0Jackson Historical Society President\u00a0George Kitchen,\u00a0President of Friends of Leo\u00a0Petroglyph\u00a0Michael Stroth, WesBanco Banking Center\u00a0Manager Denise Brown and Jim Meacham\u00a0member of Friends of Leo\u00a0Petroglyph.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This land was\u00a0purchased\u00a0by Friends of Leo\u00a0Petroglyph for future\u00a0expansion,&#8221; explained Jim Meacham\u00a0member of Friends of Leo\u00a0Petroglyph.\u00a0&#8220;We hope it will act as a\u00a0barrier to slow down civilization that is heading this way. That way we can preserve what we have here.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Meacham added, &#8220;The parking lot was the only area we had to have the\u00a0Rendezvous at the Rock event so we decided to go ahead a purchase the land, which came\u00a0available\u00a0about a year and half ago.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our first and largest donor was WesBanco, who donated $4,000, to kick off the purchasing of the land. We thank WesBanco very much,&#8221; said Meacham.\u00a0&#8220;There were many other donors, some\u00a0sizable\u00a0donors from the\u00a0Jackson Historical Society and many other smaller donors as well. We thank you all.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Jackson Historical Society President\u00a0George Kitchen stated, &#8220;I want to thank Bill Martin for doing all of the legal work, a big thank you to\u00a0Michael Stroth,\u00a0Jim Meacham and all of the other people on the committee that put forth effort to get this accomplished. I&#8217;m really proud of everything that they have done out here on the\u00a0Leo\u00a0Petroglyph\u00a0property it looks great and the event today is just great.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Leo Petroglyph is located north of Jackson about 5 miles on U.S. Route 35. To get there, travel north on 35 and turn right on County Road 28, Sour Run Road, about 2 miles; then turn left on Township Road 224, Park Road.
