Ruth Irene Hughes, age 72, of Jackson, passed away on Sunday, July 7, 2019 at the OSU Medical Center – Hospice of Central Ohio in Columbus. She was born in Jackson County on March 3, 1947 to the late David Edward Burt and Lucy “Ellen” (Arthur) Burt.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Charles Hayden Hughes; brothers: Ralph, Harold, David “Cerdic,” Carl and Johnny Burt; sisters: Thelma Jean Imes and Virginia Burt; and a son-in-law, Douglas Prater.
She is survived by her sons: Charles Hayden Hughes, Jr. (Margie), Dexter Elliott Hughes (Mahalia) and Richard Duane Hughes (Pattie); and daughters: Teresa Darlene Stem (Donald) and Melissa Ann Prater. Also surviving are several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and sisters-in-law, Frances and Myra Burt.
Ruth was a member of Emmanuel House of Refuge, a member of St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, and a member of the McDonald’s Coffee Club of Jackson.
Funeral services will be held at the Mayhew-Brown Funeral Home on Thursday, July 11 at 1 p.m. with Wilford Gillem officiating. Burial will follow at Fairmount Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, July 10 from 4 to 8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
