By | March 12, 2013

Ruby Eileen (Maddy) Perkins was born February 25, 1918 to George Walter Maddy and Elva Mae Sutterfield in Scioto County, Ohio. She married at age 18 to Samuel Writtenhour Perkins on December 12, 1936. Thirteen children (seven boys and six girls) were born to this union.

She was born toward the end of World War I, grew up during the Great Depression, and raised a family through World War II, Korean War, Vietnam and Persian Gulf War. Having brothers, sons and grandchildren serves during these times. There have been many wonders made during her time on this earth.

She was a woman of faith and devotion. She, her sisters and brothers were self-taught players of the guitar and many other musical instruments. She loved to play and sing with her family late into the night. She loved to write her own songs and poems. All the grand-kids remember her special “Tang-juice” she kept in the fridge; just picture Oj, Tang, and more sugar. She was a wonderful seamstress, making many of the kids’ clothes and special gifts for the grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years and her loving parents. Also her brothers, Fred H. Maddy, Otis J Maddy, O. Harold Maddy, Lester R. Maddy; and sisters, Ruth I. Binsack (her identical twin), Mary G. Hamilton; and children, Opal M. “Patty” Rose, Leonard Perkins, Wanda J. Kuhn, Samuel D. Perkins, Helen L. (Jim) Overturf, Ralph T. Perkins, Robert M. Perkins and four grandchildren.

She is survived by her children, Janet L. (George T.) Patterson of Jackson, OH, Ferne E. Toppins of Columbus, OH, John W. Perkins of Lancaster, OH, William M. (Patricia) Perkins of Hilliard, OH, Ruthie E. (Terry) Flower of Thornville, OH; sister, Mildred L. Ramsey of Portsmouth, OH; 28 grandchildren and countless great-grandchildren. She was the pillar of the family and will be greatly missed.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the funeral home for the family.
