Richard S. Hunter

Richard Hunter, age 85, of West Portsmouth, passed away Tuesday, June 12, 2012 at the Adena Medical Center in Chillicothe. He was born May 12, 1927 in Flushing, New York to the late Stephen A. and Eva M. (Meirer) Hunter.

He is survived by his wife, Helen L. (Bloomfield) Hunter, whom he married February 4, 1994; daughter, Susan J. Hunter; two special friends, Don Pettit and James Cutter; many friends and associates, and his little dog, Sugar.

Richard was in the U.S. Navy’s Naval Reserve, World War II in 1945, he graduated from the Ohio Sate University College of Law in 1948, and was admitted to the Ohio Bar Association in 1950. He was assistant Ohio Attorney General for two years, and went on to take up an Ohio Worker’s Compensation practice for 60 years. He was a member of the St. John’s Evangelical/Lutheran Church in New York City.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a step son, Scottie Roach; brother, George M. Hunter; uncle, Emil P. Meier; and aunt, Lucille Mull.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 16, 2012 at the Lewis-Gillum Funeral Home (formerly Kuhner-Lewis) in Oak Hill with Rev Cline Rawlins officiating. Burial will follow in Gallia Baptist Cemetery. Friends may call Friday, June 15, 2012 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Military graveside services will be honored by the D.A.V. of Jackson. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to SOMC Hospice of Portsmouth.
