Marvin “Gene” Bates Jr.

Marvin Eugene “Gene” Bates Jr. age 57 of Coalton passed away Sunday, Feb. 28, 2021 at Grant Medical Center. He was born August 7, 1963 in Gallipolis, Ohio to the late Loretta Elvene (Van Sickle) Bates and Marvin Eugene Bates Sr.

Gene was a graduate of Southwestern High School class of 1981. He graduated from the police academy in 1984 and served eleven combined years with Wellston, Jackson, and Coalton Police Departments. He was elected Mayor of Coalton in 2004 where he held office for 2 years. After that he drove a truck for Forward Air until he became disabled in 2011.

Gene was a beloved father and grandfather. He was known for his love of drag racing and his ability to be the most intimidating and stubborn man in the room. He enjoyed spending time with his grandsons, who he considered to be the pride and joy of his life.

He is survived by his daughter, Nicola “Nikki” (Jarrod) Denney; and two grandsons, Zain Bates and Layden Denney; he is also survived by a brother, Brian Bates; and sister, Debi (Dale) Hansen; as well as a special companion, Michelle Favazzo; and several nieces, nephews and their children.

In addition to his parents, he is proceeded in death by son, Andrew “Andy” Canterbury; daughter, Cassandra “Cassie” Canterbury; as well as Gilbert “Uncle Gib” Van Sickle.

Friends may call Friday, March 5, 2021 from 4p.m. to 5p.m.at the Lewis & Gillum Funeral Home of Jackson. Funeral services will immediately follow at 5p.m. Burial will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the funeral home to help with expenses.
