John Gary Harbert

John Gary Harbert, age 72, of Waverly, Ohio, passed from this life unexpectedly on August 5, 2013 at 5:50 p.m., at Adena Regional Medical Center in Chillicothe.

John was born to the late John and Lucille Booth Harbert of Jackson, Ohio on August 31, 1940. He leaves behind his loving wife, Susan (Blair) Harbert, and two sons, John Russell Harbert and William (Billy) Marcus Harbert and wife Natalie, all of Waverly, and grandchildren, Jessica Harbert, a senior at Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, Bryce Bailey, Little Billy Harbert and Lainey Harbert of Waverly, Ohio. He is also survived by sisters, Joanna Jones, Chillicothe, Ohio, Rosalie Crabtree, Circleville, Ohio, Loretta (Tom) Jones, Jackson, Ohio, and Flora Rhea (Norman), Jackson, Ohio, and many nephews and nieces.

John graduated from Jackson High School, Class of 1958. He attended Ohio State Barber College in Columbus, Ohio and has been a barber for 54 years. He and his son, Billy, own and operate Harbert’s Barber Shop in Waverly, Ohio.

John retired with 12 years of service as a Pike County Commissioner and served in numerous committees and organizations, including Ohio Valley RC&D, the Senior Counsel Advisory Committee, and he attended the South Central Ohio JDC meetings, OVRDC and Buckeye Joint County Self-Insurance Council Meetings. He was a member of the Ohio County Commissioner Association, Pike County Farm Bureau, Waverly Senior Citizens Board, and he was on the Pike Community Hospital Board of Trustees for 10 years. John was a member and past Master of the Orient Lodge #321 F.& A.M. of Waverly, Ohio as well as an Aladdin Pike County Shrine Member for 12 years.

John loved to joke with everyone he met; his personality was unforgettable. He loved his home and his family. They were his sanctuary, his joy. John was an important part of the growth and development of his community. He will be sadly missed by his wife Susie and their family, and many community friends. A special thank you to Pleasant Hill Manor of Piketon, Ohio for their support and care to Susan Harbert and family during their time of loss.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Botkin Funeral Home in Waverly with Rev. Wendell Vermillion officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Union Cemetery. Friends may call on Saturday from 4 to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home. A Masonic service will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday.
