Joan Canter Dill, age 72 – wife, mother, EMT, grandmother, church member, bear crafter, fire district fiscal officer, doll and tea pot collector – succumbed to the ravages of colorectal cancer on October 25, 2021, about four years after its onset. She was the wife of Lisle Dill, who survives. Joan was born a triplet along with twin brothers to the late James and Evelene (Swann) Canter at the doctor’s office, in Oak Hill, Ohio, on Father’s Day, June 19, 1949. She was a 1968 graduate of Oak Hill High School. She grew up and spent her entire life in the Pyro community, near Oak Hill, Ohio, along with her brother, Jerry, and sisters, Carol (Canter) Potter and Cynthia (Jack) Adkins, who survive. Also surviving are nephew, Brandon Potter; great-nephews: Eli and Evan Potter; niece, Valerie (Denver) Hubbard; and great-nieces: Abbi, Morgan and Ryan Hubbard, along with many cousins and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her infant brother, Gene; her nephew, Ryan Potter; brother-in-law, Ivan Potter; her dear grandmother, Gathel; grandfather, A. L. Swann; and special cousin, Pamela (Swann) Miller.
In the fall of 1967, she caught the eye of a young man who came to Oak Hill to be the Ag. teacher at the high school. Joan and Lisle Dill were married in May of 1968, and together they celebrated 53 years of marriage this spring. From this union, the apples of her eye were born, their twin daughters Stephanie Jan (Joe) Schulte of Delaware, Ohio, and Marcia Joan (Eric) Schaefer of Hillsboro, Ohio. She was very proud of her girls and their accomplishments, and she so loved her grandchildren: Natalie, Jaima, and Alison Schulte, and Cole, McKenna and Claire Schaefer.
Joan spent her early married years as a full-time mother to her precious girls, but when they started school, an opportunity arose to become part of the area’s brand-new medical service as an Emergency Medical Technician. She worked for the Southeast Ohio EMS in Oak Hill for about 10 years until a shoulder injury forced her retirement. Fate would soon put her to work as a caregiver for her grandma’s medical problems and later as a caregiver for her father after he developed Parkinson’s Disease. She also was the clerk/fiscal officer for the Madison Jefferson Joint Fire District for over 18 years, retiring because of health issues just three years ago.
Joan was a member of the Oak Hill Freewill Baptist Church for many years and later a member of the Trinity Chapel CCC Church, in Jackson, faithfully attending until health problems prevented her from doing so.
Friends may call Thursday, October 28, 2021, from 4 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the Lewis & Gillum Funeral Home of Oak Hill. Funeral services will be held Friday, October 29, 2021, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Knox Bullock officiating. Burial will follow in C.M. Cemetery.
