James Lewis Humphreys, age 78, of Jackson, Ohio, passed away Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at his residence. He was born in Coalton, Ohio, on January 22, 1935. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sidney and Blanche (Hamilton) Humphreys; brother, Robert William “Bill” Humphreys and sister, Betty Humphreys Milliken.
He is survived by his wife, Wanda (Waulk) Humphreys, whom he met at the Jackson County Apple Festival in 1955 and married Feb. 21, 1956; children: James David “Dave” (Paula) Humphreys, George (Donna) Humphreys, Sean (Stacey) Humphreys, and Gidget (Daniel) Bowling; grandchildren: Amie Humphreys, Jared Humphreys, Koty Bowling, Shawnee Bowling, Jessica Humphreys, Sydney Bowling, Tyler Humphreys, Lexi Humphreys, and Kelsey Humphreys; great-grandchildren: Lindsey Pierce, Brooklinn Patterson, Brydn Bowling, Kolsyn Bowling, Jimasyn Walters and Rowan Bowling; and sister, Janet McCumber.
Jim was a U.S. Navy veteran; was previously employed at Westinghouse as a welder, was president of Local 748 for 18 years; district representative of AFL-CIO IUE; a council member for the City of Jackson and served as president from 2004 through 2006; City Auditor from Jan. 2005 through Dec. 2011; founder of Jackson Peewee Football in 1988; one of the founders of the Jackson Sideliners Club; major force in starting new Alumni Stadium; he was honored by the City of Jackson in 2008 by having the entrance to Eddie Jones Park named “Jim Humphreys Way”; member of the Democratic Party, the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, and the American Legion #0277 (eight-year member).
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 26, 2013 at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church with Father John Joseph Trapp officiating and burial to follow in the Mount Olivet Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday, January 24, 2013 and from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, January 25, 2013 at the Mayhew-Brown Funeral Home with a vigil prayer service being held at 7:30 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.
